Thomas Byrne, a 60-year-old retired engineer from Mayo, experienced a severe disability due to delayed diagnosis and treatment of a stroke. In 2019, Thomas was rushed to the hospital after experiencing sudden weakness on one side of his body, slurred speech, and confusion—classic symptoms of a stroke.
Despite these clear signs, the emergency department staff failed to recognize the severity of his condition and delayed in performing the necessary diagnostic tests. As a result, the critical window for administering clot-busting medication was missed, leading to significant and irreversible brain damage.
“I hope my case will bring attention to the critical need for prompt action in treating strokes. Time is of the essence, and delays can have devastating consequences,” Thomas said.
Thomas’s legal team emphasized the importance of immediate response and treatment for stroke symptoms. The €750,000 settlement aimed to cover his extensive medical expenses, including rehabilitation, long-term care, and modifications to his home to accommodate his disability. It also accounted for his lost income and the significant impact on his quality of life.
The hospital involved acknowledged their failure and committed to improving their stroke response protocols. This included implementing mandatory stroke training for emergency department staff, introducing stroke alert systems to ensure rapid response, and increasing public awareness about the signs of stroke and the importance of immediate medical attention.
